Having acne is not always related to fertility. In few cases however, chronic acne may be caused by a hormonal imbalance. Acne could be a symptom of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a condition in which the ovaries secrete abnormally high amounts of androgens (male hormones) that often cause problems with ovulation and thus do affect fertility. Women with PCOS have enlarged ovaries which contain multiple, small cysts. PCOS can be completely asymptomatic. More commonly, the following symptoms are associated with PCOS – weight gain, hirsutism (abnormal hair growth on chin, chest or other unwanted areas), irregular periods, acne, oily skin, enlarged ovaries and insulin resistance. Acne, along with other signs may prompt an evaluation for PCOS. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, a reduced fat and carbohydrate diet, along with aerobic exercises and symptomatic skin treatment for acne may help. In moderate to severe cases, a proper course of medication is usually required.
