Trichologist Dr Shahid Shamsher talks about the latest research which shows that various pollution that make you go bald faster.

Can you tell us more about this research?

The research was carried out at the University of London. In the study, samples of hair were removed from people staying in different areas Scientists conducting the research found that samples removed from more polluted areas showed higher degrees of “oxidative stress”, a process known to cause damage to follicular hair growth leading to faster baldness.

How relevant is the research?

As clinical practitioners we have seen so many cases where the father or mother, would be balding only by 50’s, whereas the son or the daughter would starting balding from their 20’s itself, clearly hinting that genetics alone did not play a role here. In fact premature baldness was therefore always suspected to be due to factors like change of water, stress, nutrition defects, exposures to toxins in the air etc. This research has confirmed the belief that holistic approach keeping genetics and environmental both in mind while treating a case gives a better long term control of hair loss.
