Excessive intake of alcohol is known to trigger or worsen acne breakouts. Alcohol is an astringent and shrinks the pores, making them more prone to clogging. Secondly studies have confirmed that men and women who drink alcohol excessively have high levels of testosterone and estrogen respectively. These high hormones levels increase the sebum production, thereby clog pores and cause acne. Thirdly alcohol inhibits sleep, causing fatigue and stress. Stress is a known acne trigger. Furthermore, acne can also be caused due to dehydration, which is a known side effect of excess alcohol consumption. It can make your skin dry and inflamed, thereby stimulating acne. Drinks like beer and other sugary cocktails can aggravate candida which is another reason for acne to flare. Thus it is best for acne to avoid alcohol or consume it in moderation.
