Very often I am asked – I have severe dandruff since a long time. Because of that I am losing a lot of hair as well. I tried all sorts of shampoos and they help for one or two weeks and then the dandruff is back. Can you tell me how to cure dandruff?
Before trying to find a permanent solution to dandruff, it is important to first make sure that you do have a dandruff problem and not some other scalp condition which only looks like dandruff. From my experience I have found that nearly 90% of patients with scales on their scalp have wrongly identified their condition as dandruff, and in fact have some different problem altogether. You can classify dandruff into three categories-
1. Harmless. This is just dryness of the scalp which comes about with the cold weather and every often disappears on its own, even if you don’t do anything about it.
2. Harmful. These are scalp infections, very often fungal, which cause much itching and flaking and last all year through causing much hair fall as well. However these are still treatable and when correctly treated is a curable condition.
3. Dangerous. In this category come skin diseases of the scalp, the most common one being psoriasis. What makes this condition dangerous is its ability to spread to the body and lead to a much larger problem.
