Flaxseeds are one of the best known healing foods for acne. Their healing property comes from the fact that they are rich in Essential Fatty Acids (EFA). EFA plays an important role in preventing acne by keeping the production of androgens under control. Androgens are hormones that influence sebum production and are particularly active during adolescence, which is why most teenagers suffer from acne. EFA also alleviates inflammation associated with acne by controlling the production of a hormone called leukotrein B-4. A deficiency of EFA can cause inflammatory disorders, weak skin resistance, poor skin texture, increased production of oil, enlarged pores and slow healing of acne. Apart from flaxseeds, other rich sources of EFA are olive oil, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, avocados, grape seed oil, walnuts, and oily fish such as salmons, sardines and tuna.
Most people use garlic as a condiment to spice up their food. However it has medicinal properties as well. It is rich in sulphur and is considered to be one of the first natural antibiotics. Because of its anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties, it acts as a natural medicine for acne. You can add finely chopped garlic in your regular food or have it in its raw form. If you have a problem with its foul smell, soak it in milk for about an hour before consumption. I would however not recommend external application of garlic on the skin as it has known to cause burning of the skin in a few cases. It is important however to exhibit caution even with natural home remedies as they may not suit every skin type.
