A wisecrack once remarked that the only thing that can stop hair fall is the floor. As if treating hair fall is not a problem enough, Trichologist Dr Shahid Shamsher tells us of another way in which baldness can come even though the hair fall maybe completely normal. Via hair thinning.
What is the process of thinning?
In medical terms it is also known as Miniaturization wherein the strands of hair, as they go through their lifecycle, become progressively thinner and thinner, to a stage where they eventually just disappear. Very often the patient remarks that I have never ever seen my hair fall and yet when you see the scalp there is considerable hair loss and baldness. Often it starts from the back or top of the head and therefore it’s the friends or relatives that realize these change even before the patient does.
What types of conditions are seen with this kind of thinning?
Earlier the more condition was hereditary hair loss. However, nowadays it is increasingly seen in another condition called Chronic Telogen Effluvium where the hair loss happens due to environmental factors like repeated and frequent change of water that results from traveling or relocating every 1-2 years or long term stress, which need not be severe nature, but something has been happening for a long time. The net result is that while before we would see these types of changes in a person only after the ages of 40-45, nowadays we see them in a younger age group sometimes even starting from the ages of 18.
Is this more common in men or women?
The differences have increasingly blurred with passage of time. In women this often precipitated by some hormonal event. For example post-menopausal or post-childbirth (especially second childbirth) are the more common times this problem starts and the thinning gets quite visible 1-3 years after the trigger-event. Less often it can also start after menarche (the onset of periods).
